The world in which we live already has too many problems; that there is already more than enough to go around. Therefore, it would be unhealthy, and at the same time unwise to add on to that problem by living a life of self-pity. A life filled with excessive, self-absorbed unhappiness over one’s troubles.

People living with self-pity have got it all wrong. They often are led to believe that they have the worst problems on the planet, or that they are not achieving certain feats in life because of a perceived lack, or absence of certain characteristics. Therefore, these people just wait for anything life throws at them, because in their opinions, “life isn’t fair.”

You see, self-pity other from its myriad of negative consequences, also gives rise to a slew of other negative attributes. It is also a direct result of self-loathing and a low self-esteem. A state of “I am not good enough” or “I cannot achieve anything good because of the way society perceives me.” Those feelings and attitudes are great steals of people’s potentials; because the drive, zeal and determination to get things done, often ebbs away with the wind.

People find themselves stifled by the fear and criticisms of judgmental people, and even outright failure. Such people, rather than take the necessary steps to add value to their lives, would rather complain about everything that is not working, and how fair or unfair the world is. They feel miserable with their lives, and also want others to feel the same about them. In the words of Bill Gates,

“Life is not fair; get used to it!”- Bill Gates

So, if you are out there, waiting for the world to treat you in a certain way, and that doesn’t seem like it’s happening, rather than hurl up and be bitter, or cover yourself in sackcloth to attract more pity, it’s time to get up and make that decision to take the best shot at life.

Self-pity, would not pay your bills, support your family, or help you live the life that you have always dreamed about; setting concrete goals for yourself, and taking the actions needed to accomplish them would. You do not have to continue living a mediocre life, because you are waiting for the world to turn out a certain way. Now is the time to take action, and make good on those things you have promised yourself and your family.

Many times we may be led to believe that because of certain perceptions or attributes of society, the world owes us something. More like a feeling of entitlement, and when that thing we perceive as being owed doesn’t fall through, we slip into that cage of self-pity and self-loathing. Mark Twain says it beautifully,

“Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.”- Mark Twain

In wrapping this up my dear friends, we live in a world of “survival of the fittest.” No one cares about your welfare more than you do. If you must make something good out of your life, it’s time to quit the pity party, and do what you need to do now. There are so many opportunities around us, you can either seize on one of them, or even create one yourself. Regardless of what you choose, the point is, the world owes you nothing other than to see what you are able to make out of your life! Do not short change yourself by dining with self-pity, because you have got what it takes to make your mark in this world. Go for it!
