I saw a cool mod on a FB page. The guy had his watchmaker put a 6r20 escaptment into his modded Seiko which he was also putting in a Seiko or SII hacking movement which had the day of the week in it from the get go. However it could be done with a 6r15 as well. Show
The end game was that the beat rate went up to 28.8bph. He claimed some very high accuracy as well. I have heard that beat rate and accuracy are not all that related so I won't touch that! He did have a video and the second had sweep looked nice, which would be my ultimate endgame. I pm'd him and he said that one needs: balance wheel, anchor, escapement wheel, hairspring, main spring. from an 6r20 movement. (Of course you need a crown and stem that makes it all work with your movement/case swap as well. This ain't my first dog and pony show.) I found a 6r20 parts map PDF from Seiko USA and the parts for the 6r20 movement are accessible. Like me, the guy outsources all the actual work, so I think his watchmaker came up with the idea and took the lead on all of it. The watchmaker was a Seiko approved watch repair guy or something like that. I will say the guy seems to have enough knowledge to have a pretty good idea of what the watchmaker did. So key details could be missing however. Has anybody around here tried this? On the FB page folks were freakin out on it but like at "Mods Neophytes 101" level so I am boosting it up to here. I did a quick search on this forum and nothing came up. My apologies if I missed something. Hey it brought me back to old skool forums and away from the FB Cambridge Analytica Crack Place. Here's link to the Seiko USA's parts PDF of the 6r20 movement - www.seikoserviceusa.com/uploads/datasheets/6R20A_21A.pdf Any thoughts? thanks - bb Last Edit: Mar 13, 2019 8:57:55 GMT -8 by bb Deleted Deleted Member Posts: 0 Post by Deleted on Mar 13, 2019 9:31:14 GMT -8Since Seiko rationalized the parts for the 6r, 4r and 7s movements, it is entirely possible to do this but it will only work with the latest 'rationalized' versions. Sounds like a fun way to get hi beat performance at an economy price. You still won't end up with a chronometer but who really cares aout that anyway. bb Timekeeper Posts: 119 Post by bb on Mar 13, 2019 11:34:12 GMT -8Thanks for your feedback. Makes sense. I have a few Ne15's and Nh35's laying around. I'll check out where they land in terms of Ne15 a, b, c, and see if I can piece it all together before I source any parts. Of course if some brave men, more experienced, skilled and just plan smarter than me take the lead, I can always humbly follow the greater footprints of others and save me a lot of time, money, and frustration. Post by bklake on Mar 15, 2019 6:04:26 GMT -8I would be up for this except I can't find the parts. I'm a mere mortal with no connections to order these parts. I even have a 4R36 than needs a balance so this would bring that one back to life. I'm guessing $60-100 in parts based on similar parts prices. Not the most economical mod but what mod is? That makes this an expensive mod if you are a cheap guy like most of us tend to be with this stuff, but cheap if you want a nicely humming 28,800 bph Seiko movement I guess. Anybody interested PM me. The Dagaz mod parts were $75ish, the NE15 was $110, Stargate dial $55. Still have to relieve an NH36 watch of its Day parts. Oh yea, the Kanji Day wheel I got, almost forgot., $35. What's another 125 bucks? I'm good with math but I'm not even going to add up that list. Averaged out over 14 years of owning it, it isn't that bad. I'm going to research this some more before I jump. I can service a movement but not sure if I'm good enough yet to diagnose, correct any potential problems. Any chance you managed to get the escape wheel and barrel complete before they went out of stock? HiBeat Global Moderator SEIKO Iko Iko GDTRWS Posts: 8,618 Post by HiBeat on May 17, 2019 19:48:02 GMT -8Nope. This project wasn't for me. I am dropping a 6R15 into my SKX mod with a day wheel addition mod on top of that, but haven't gotten around to it yet and probably won't for some time. Back when this discussion was new, those parts were available from coserv. Now they show as 0 quantity and not available. |
