Hi, still trying to figure out how much camera I need to easily photograph kids in action with ease while they are indoors.

I was disappointed with the x-t2 and the 35 f1.4. Af-c was too poor. I hear getting one of the newer f2 lenses may solve my issue. But I need a reference first. People say DSLR is the way to go. The 6d is a good one I am told that doesn’t break the bank. Which Fuji models and lenses do I need that would at least equal a 6d autofocus speeds? Thanks

From my experience with the x-t20 and x-t3 they will not match a canon dslr for af-c capturing moving kids indoors. A 60D with 17-55f2.8 using central focus point easily outperforms the Fuji with the 35f2 which is supposed to have a fast af motor

If using flash too there seems to be a short pause on the Fuji after the shutter is pressed so the resulting image is out of focus because the subject has moved.

The X-T3 should easily beat the old Canon 60D in AF-C, otherwise you're doing something wrong. Even indoors, depending on the lens ofc.

The old Canon 6D (Full frame camera) is horrible (compared to several other cameras in that price range) in AF-C, so do NOT go for the 6D if you want to shoot any kind of action. For single stills it's still a nice camera though!

I do recommend a mirrorless camera though. If you wan't a Fuji that doesn't break the bank, i'd go with the X-T30 (if you want the newer AF system in a cheaper body) or a used X-T2 (slightly slower AF, but better build/weather resistance and more controls etc.).

The 35 1.4, though an optically superb lens, is about as slow as you can get for the system. The 35 F2 will be much better for your needs, and that combination with an XT-2 should mark rings around a 6D with any lens. Must be something up in your settings if you find the camera slow? Are you up to date on the firmware? I had the older XT-1 and also had the 35 1.4 and never had problems taking pics of the kids ... I never use C-AF though, S-AF 99% of the time with any camera I use and rarely miss a shot - just practice your timing

X-T30

In reply to Lamen • Apr 29, 2019

If you can't get it with X-T2 you are not going to get with X-T20 but others already said it's the issue of lens. To get fast focusing you need lens that has linear_motor

X-T30 is far improved in auto focus than it's predecessor.

I don't think buying a entry level full frame DSLR is not a good idea for this purpose in this time. Well that's my opinion.

Haven't had a 6d but I'm fairly sure it has the same cross type centre point that.is increased in sensitivity when using lenses up to f2.8 wide. The common 'poor af' comments are because the other af points arent cross type so the overall af system isn't as flexible. The cross type on my 60d with a 2.8 lens was always fast and reliable

Very funny! Honestly I recommend a Nikon D5 or Canon 1DXII plus a 24-70/2.8. Kids in action indoors means you need a real Pro camera with excellent AF and great high ISO performance. And then it's still not an easy task.

For sure it is not the Canon 6D which I owned. Very nice camera but not for any kind of action.

I don't own it but I guess that an X-T3 plus 16-55/2.8 will be much faster than a Canon 6D. I think my X Pro2 with 16-55 is faster than the Canon 6D for action.

Stay away from the older Fuji primes if you want to have fast continuous AF. i.e.: 23/1.4, 35/1.4 and 56/1.2 are slow especially in poor light. 23/2, 35/2 and 50/2 are much faster.

Re: Canon 6d vs x-t20 or x-t30

Thanks everyone for letting me know that the 6D is just too old now.

I really like the 35mm f1.4’s glow or fall off. It renders very special and that’s why I never got the 23 f2 or 35 mm f2.

Are there any other lenses that will give me this same effect whether it’s a Fuji lens or Canon or Nikon? And it must focus fast

I have a 6d and a xe3. af is great with the 6d provided you use only the central point and af-s mode only.

Regarding IQ the 6d is a little ahead in my opinion due to its FF frame sensor but you would notice it only by pixel peeping. I got the fuji for size and weight reasons but my 6d with good glass like a sigma 35 is only beaten for studio and landscape by a modern FF imho such as Sony A7iii or Nikon d850 (please note this is a totally subjective opinion).

if your priority is fast af-c i would look for something else, either a canon 80d (or wait for a 90d) or a fuji x-t3/-t30 or go for a 5dIV, sony a7iii or nikon d850 if your budget (and back)! allows it.

best

When I shot with the Fuji system, the only lens I used was the 35 1.4

Yes. However it isn't in the Fuji system.

The Canon Ef-M 32 f/1.4 STM is a superb lens. Auto-focus is fast and snappy. This was the lens that led me to convert to the M system. Plus, if you do go this route, you would be able to adapt Ef/Ef-s without having to use a third party adapter (Canon males their own).

Hope this is helpful!
