How do you remove this workbook contains one or more links that Cannot be updated?

If the Microsoft® Excel® Workpaper opens, and the name does not appear at the top of the workpaper, refer to the steps in the article Microsoft® Excel® workpapers are missing functionality and don't display the file name at the top of the window when opened from CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement or Workpaper Manager.

You may also receive this message when opening a Microsoft® Excel® workbook that contains any of the following broken links:

  • Trial Balance Links
  • Journal Entry Links
  • Microsoft® Office External Reference Links
  • Microsoft® Office Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) Links

To resolve this problem, do the following:

  1. Check for unresponsive instances of Microsoft® Excel®.

    1. Close all Microsoft® Excel® Workbooks.
    2. Right-click on the Task Bar and select Task Manager.
      • Or press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and click Task Manager.
    3. Click on the Processes tab and sort by process Name.
      • For Microsoft® Windows® 8.1 and higher, click the Details tab. 
    4. Right-click and choose End Process on any Excel.exe or excel.exe*32 item listed.
    5. Test the Microsoft® Excel® workbook to see if you still receive the message.
  2. Check the Microsoft® Excel® workpaper for improper links.
    1. From inside the workpaper click DATA > Edit Links.
      • Or go to File > Edit Links. 
    2. In the Edit Links window, click Check Status.
    3. Verify the Status is Source is open.
      • If the Status is not Source is open for epace.xla, then replace epace.xla. See How to replace the Microsoft® Excel® add-in (epace.xla) for CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement for instructions.
      •  ​If the Status is not Source is open for any other link, then refer to Microsoft's article on Object Linking and Embedding (OLE).
  3. Check the workpaper for improper External Reference (links).
    1. Click FORMULAS > Name Manager.
    2. Locate any entries that show #REF under the Value column.
    3. Correct these bad links or delete the reference.
  4. Check for multiple Microsoft® Office installations.
    1. If you do not use Microsoft® Windows® 10, proceed to step 4. Otherwise, continue with step 2.
    2. Search for Apps and Features from the Microsoft® Windows® 10 start menu and click to open.
    3. Look for the Microsoft Office Desktop App.
      • If you don't have the Microsoft Office Desktop App, continue to step 4.
      • If you see the Microsoft Office Desktop App, highlight it and click Uninstall. Then, continue to step 4.
    4. Search for and click on Control Panel from your Windows start menu. 
    5. Locate and click on Programs and Features.
    6. Identify any extra Microsoft® Offices, then highlight and click Uninstall. Alternatively, you can click Change to uninstall. 
    7. Highlight the current Microsoft® Office from Programs and Features and click Repair. Alternatively, you can click Change to repair.

  • If the Microsoft® Office installation was upgraded from Microsoft® Office to Microsoft® Office 365™ or vice versa and a repair to Engagement or Workpaper Manager does not resolve the issue, it's possible there's previous registry keys and/or configuration from the previous Microsoft® Office installation still present.  If so try performing the following:
    1. Uninstall Engagement or Workpaper Manager (Note: Do not uninstall Microsoft® SQL Server.)

    1. Uninstall Microsoft® Office and perform the steps in the below article to remove all previous configuration.

    2. Reboot the machine.
    3. Reinstall the current installation of Microsoft® Office or Microsoft® Office 365™
    4. Reinstall Engagement or Workpaper Manager

Notes

  • If the workbook contains hidden sheets you must unhide all sheets before viewing the references in Name Manager. External References listed within hidden sheets will remain hidden unless the sheets are unhidden.

Go to File > Options > Advanced. Under General, clear the Ask to update automatic links check box. If this check box is cleared, the links are automatically updated, and no alert is displayed.

Open the Excel spreadsheet..
Click File..
Click Info..
Click Edit Links to Files..
In the Edit Links pop-up, if relevant select the link and click Break Link and confirm..
Save the spreadsheet..
