The mid-sized 2023 X5 is essentially unchanged from last year. The X5 comes with a ton of standard features, including memory seats, remote engine start, a large panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, high-beam assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and even cool tech features like a large gauge cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It’s worth noting that the X5 platform and powertrains also make up the basis for the bigger and more luxurious three-row X7. PerformanceThe X5 is offered with three different powerplants. The xDrive40i uses a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that puts out 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. It’s also surprisingly efficient, returning a combined fuel consumption rating of 10.4 L/100 km. For greater efficiency, though, the xDrive45e is the one to get, as it combines the six-cylinder with a more advanced electrical system. The two systems work together to provide 389 hp, but the coolest part is the xDrive45e can travel 50 km on electric power alone. Finally, there’s the M50i, which packs a 523-hp 4.4L turbocharged V8 under its hood. PracticalityThe X5 is spacious and offers optional and somewhat cramped third-row seats. For the standard five-seat models, there’s 960 litres of cargo room behind the second row, expanding to 2,047 litres when those seats are folded down. Inside, the X5 has the latest generation of BMW connectivity technologies and intelligent digital services and driver assistance systems. Canadian PricingThe most affordable 2023 X5 is the xDrive40i, which starts at $79,100. The plug-in hybrid xDrive45e is $80,600, making it a relative bargain considering the extra efficiency and performance. The topline M50i has a starting MSRP of $95,800.
