Designed with affordability and driving enthusiasts in mind, the Honda Civic Si is a front-wheel-drive compact sport utility vehicle that doesn’t cost a lot and is a lot of fun to drive. Sold exclusively as a four-door sedan and only with a six-speed manual transmission, the Civic Si uses a 200-horsepower version an ordinary citizen1.5-liter turbocharged inline four. Black cloth seats with red stitching and Sport Injected (Si) accents throughout the interior highlight the cabin with modern technology, including wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. While crossovers like Volkswagen Taos and Hyundai Kona replaced fun compact cars like Golfand Velaster, the Civic Si thrives as an entertaining alternative to a world largely populated by the everyday. Although it does not have as much horsepower as the Golf GTI hatchbackits lower starting price and standard equipment make it a temptation worth exploring. Show

What’s new in 2023?The all-new Civic Si debuted last year, so the fun sports compact returns for 2023 without any equipment changes. Pricing and which one to buyIt’s easy. Since the Si is only offered as a fully loaded model, there isn’t much to choose from. However, to get maximum cornering performance, we’ll pay an extra $200 to get the optional summer tires. Engine, transmission and performanceUnder the hood of the Civic Si is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. That power is sent to the front wheels via a standard limited-slip differential and a six-speed manual transmission; an automatic option is not currently offered. Our practical experience found some roughness from the engine when pushed, but there was little turbo lag and we liked the short throws of the gearshift and the smooth action. The manual gearbox also has rev control for less advanced drivers heel-toe technique, and it’s easy to turn it on or off. On the test track our long-term Civic Si sprinted to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, 0.7 seconds faster than The Civic hatchback we tested with a six-speed manual. Compared to the regular Civic, the Si has larger brake discs and is available with a set of summer tires. The latter, combined with the car’s firmer suspension, gives the Si an edge in the handling department, and although adaptive dampers are no longer included, the standard suspension was smooth, stable and never felt harsh. Fuel economy and real mpgThe Civic Si is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. As soon as we get a chance to run one on our 75mph highway route which is part of our extensive testing regime, we can estimate its actual mpg. For more information on Civic fuel economy, visit EPA website. Interior, comfort and cargoAn exclusive set of padded sport seats, distinctive Si logos on the headrests and red contrast stitching are among the main ways Honda differentiates the Si’s interior from the standard Civic. Red stitching extends to the doors, steering wheel and other surfaces to show off the car’s sporty look. The decorative mesh that spans the entire length of the dashboard and hides the HVAC vents also gets an exclusive red finish. In the Si, the driver is faced with an instrument cluster with an analog speedometer and a digital tachometer on the left. Unfortunately, unlike its predecessor, the Si is no longer offered with heated seats. With the same dimensions as the less sporty Civic sedanit provides an equally comfortable rear seat and a trunk that can hold six carry-ons. Infotainment system and communicationAs with the most equipped Civic models, the Si’s standard infotainment system features a 9.0-inch touchscreen that extends from the center of the dash. The device includes a convenient volume knob and a couple of other physical buttons. Honda equips every Si with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a standard 12-speaker Bose audio system to play on your way to the grocery store or the racetrack. Safety features and driver assistanceHonda offers an equally diverse selection of standard driver assistance technology on the latest Civic Si. For more information on the Civic’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute of Road Safety (IIHS) websites. Key security features include:
Warranty and maintenanceThe Civic Si comes with a competitive, if unremarkable, warranty. For those interested in free service, Hyundai Elantra N Line and the Golf GTI offer something the Honda doesn’t.
