Gypsies are found near heaven review

This colourful, music-filled and sensual melodrama based on early stories by Maxim Gorky tells the fatal love story between the beautiful and rebellious girl Rada and the handsome horse thief Zobar. The story is set in early 20th century Bessarabia, now part of Moldova, then belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Color and light and independence. Poverty and joy and defiance. A love that is deadly but pursued nevertheless, with inevitable results. And song — always, there is song. Songs of joy and songs of sorrow; songs to pass the time, song to tease and to mock. Songs that defy urgency; that compel a shared pause for appreciation: of music; of life; of community. The Gypsy Camp Vanishes Into The Blue is a film to be experienced, not watch. An experience that washes over the viewer, leaving behind it visions of wild horses and rolling hills; of teasing, powerful women and laughing, fearless men; of desperation (for survival; for love; for food) and regret (too much; too little; too late). And song. Always, there is song. [watch it here]

What could I possibly say? Gypsies are found near heaven is the second feature of Emil Loteanu that I have had the pleasure of viewing (thanks to a talented reviewer named Faeze). This melodrama presents itself all lively, but peel one layer off and you’ll find yourself a bitter filling. It occasionally rocks back and forth between being a western and not being a western, and I found that to be pleasantly surprising. A man and a horse, no man and no horse; it’s all here. This is a culture I know little of, a story I can barely relate to and a language that I scarcely understand. Yet, when these things blend they display the existence of the possibility…

Gorki has always been in my mind someone who could find the hidden poetry of everyday life through simplicity and make realism feel poetic, complex, without trying. Loteanu isn't exactly the director from whom one waits films that tell their stories through simplicity. And I shouldn't really compare him to Gorki but as a huge fan of Gorki, I can't help but to make this juxtaposition because Loteanu's touch is very romanticized. That kind of approach could easily scare me of but Soviet filmmakers have always find a way to make tales truly feel like tales so instead of thinking Gorki's poetry, I think about Russian tales when I see this. It isn't attempt to interpret Gorki but to use…

Old Russian films, man, they know their shit. The acting is on point, the story is beautiful, the music is the best. Everything is working so fluidly and the story is so captivating. Zobar is plagued by his love for Rada and from his own pride. Rada is debilitated by her love for Zobar and her own love for freedom. Zobar leaves a trail of destruction where he goes and it ends with him, his vanity blinding him from his demise. The young girl is my favourite character, the most cheerful person ever put on screen. Svetlana Toma and Grigore Grigoriu have such brilliant chemistry and their interactions with everyone else are so interesting to watch. A beautiful film that needs its own following ASAP.

I've heard many from the former Soviet states speak highly of this film from their childhood, now I understand what they mean. Beautiful songs, beautiful culture. It's a funny and interesting fairytale where my people are all the main characters.
